RuralConsult.com is an educational platform for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and specialists
to exchange medical knowledge in the interest of developing additional skills, reducing provider isolation, and providing
quality patient care.
How does it work?
RuralConsult.com is a store and forward telemedicine technology used for non-emergency consults. An inquiring provider logs
onto the website, selects the specialist best suited for the case, and completes the online consult forms. Still or moving
images, taken with a digital camera, can be submitted with the consult when appropriate. With a click of a button, the specialist
is notified that a consult is awaiting review. The specialist drafts recommendations and returns them via the website. For
a demonstration please log onto www.LugarCenter.org and select Telemedicine & Technology.
What are the benefits?
- RuralConsult.com links rural and urban providers and specialists regardless of the location and enhances their professional education.
- This technology is a good fit for most medical specialties. A number of specialties are offered on the site with Dermatology and
Endocrinology being the most popular.
- Patients in remote locations benefit from the technology. Some folks are unable to make lenghty trips to receive specialized care.
- Technology reduces the sense of isolation and may help increase rural provider retention.
